El Departamento de Justicia de Estados Unidos ha presentado una demanda antimonopolio contra Visa.
Se trata de una acusación que apunta al monopolio que Visa tiene en el mercado de tarjetas de débito del país.
Según el fiscal general Merrick Garland, Visa controla más del 60% de las transacciones de débito en Estados Unidos, lo que le permite generar aproximadamente 7.000 millones de dólares anuales en comisiones.
Garland afirmó que una parte significativa de estos ingresos proviene de prácticas ilegales que han permitido a Visa imponer comisiones excesivas, afectando tanto a consumidores como a comercios.
Esta conducta ha sido posible gracias a acuerdos de exclusividad con bancos y comercios, lo que ha asfixiado a la competencia potencial.
